9/10/2023 0 Comments Nodejs ubuntu![]() ![]() I have used as a starting point the DigitalOcean tutorial but they have some steps that I don't find useful and so I am only including the essential steps to quickly get started with Node.js and NPM on Ubuntu 18.04. ![]() However I believe the version that comes with apt-get by default is quite old, so I needed to install using another PPA (personal package archive). If you need a newer npm for whatever reason, use a newer NodeJS version that comes with a newer npm version.Having just created a new Ubuntu 18.04 VM in Azure, I wanted to start using Node.js and NPM directly. That means it doesn't make too much sense to update npm on its own. Regarding the relationship between NodeJS and npm, to my best knowledge the two are quite tightly coupled. ![]() # use installed version of NodeJS, for example 6.11.1 # install NodeJS, for example version 8.1.4 # install nvm, for example version 0.33.2 That's a simple bash script that enables you to install multiple versions of NodeJS in parallel and switch between them. Probably the most versatile option is to use the Node Version Manager (nvm). You can find further information at the projects GitHub repo. You can install the PPA like this (for example for NodeJS 8.x) curl -sL | sudo -E bash. NodeSource offers a personal package archive (PPA) with more current versions of NodeJS and npm. ![]() But, depending on which Ubuntu version you're running, those packages may contain outdated versions of NodeJS and npm. The recent versions of Ubuntu come with NodeJS (package nodejs) and npm (package npm). There are multiple ways to install NodeJS and npm on Ubuntu. ![]()
